The Roku Channel is upping its regional news content, adding today four new Spanish-language linear channels from NBCUniversal’s Telemundo.

The free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels are made available through an expanded partnership between Roku and NBCU. Earlier this year, The Roku Channel beefed up its local news slate by adding several NBC local channels. NBCU and Roku have also renewed their deal to run NBC News Now programming on The Roku Channel.

New channels from Telemundo include:

· Noticias Telemundo California

· Noticias Telemundo Florida

· Noticias Telemundo Noreste

· Noticias Telemundo Texas

More NBCU-owned channels are coming to The Roku Channel, with Dateline 24/7, Today all Day and Sky News International set to launch by early 2023.

“We’re pleased to expand our partnership with NBCUniversal to bring more of its premium news lineup, including national, local, international, and Spanish-language regional news channels, to The Roku Channel,” stated Ashley Hovey, head of The Roku Channel AVOD. “Audiences are increasingly streaming news, and we are thrilled to work with NBCUniversal, home to some of the industry’s most respected news organizations, to continue bringing our users a robust lineup of valuable news programming.”

NBCU and Roku’s renewed agreement comes just a few months after The Roku Channel added three more NBC local news channels to its lineup. Other NBCU content on the platform include The Rotten Tomatoes FAST channel, as well as on-demand TV shows like “Will & Grace” and “Friday Night Lights.”

News is a genre that particularly fuels FAST growth, as research firm TVREV pointed out in a recent report on the FAST landscape. TVREV’s Alan Wolk wrote local news “still very much resonates with viewers, possibly even more so these days as local newspapers close down and/or become part of larger conglomerates.”

News was flagged as one of the top five most popular categories on Comcast’s Xumo platform, per a Comcast Advertising study on FAST penetration.

The four new Telemundo channels enhance The Roku Channel’s Spanish-language offering. Roku in June launched Espacio Latino, an aggregator of Spanish-language content from Telemundo, TelevisaUnivision and other partners.

Also joining The Roku Channel today are the QVC and HSN networks, which will collectively live stream about 40 hours of shopping programming per day on Roku’s FAST platform.

These additions build onto Roku’s foray in the shoppable TV space. Roku in June teamed up with Walmart to test shoppable ads, enabling consumers to buy Walmart products directly from Roku’s platform.

QVC and HSN also have a combined shoppable streaming app, which launched on Samsung smart TVs in September. The app allows viewers to complete purchases within the app and access a variety of QVC and HSN’s on-demand and live TV content.

Fatal Truck Accident on I-5 Near Westley

Authorities reported a fatal truck accident on I-5 near the Westley area in Stanislaus County on the early morning of Thursday, August 4, 2022. The traffic collision took place around 1:00 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 in the vicinity of the exit for Ingram Creek Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A preliminary report revealed that a Lexus was allegedly stopped in the slow lane of southbound I-5. A big rig was approaching the vehicle from behind and reportedly rear-ended it, according to CHP traffic officers. The Lexus driver, a Tracy resident, was declared deceased at the scene of the truck accident. Their identity has been withheld due to pending family notification.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman indicated that an investigation into the fatal truck accident is ongoing. It is not yet known why the Lexus was stopped on the road. Additional information on the incident was not immediately available.

A wrongful death claim for a truck accident may be challenging, given the state and federal regulations that oversee the trucking industry. These cases require an immediate and thorough investigation of the facts and circumstances involved. An accident attorney may need to work with expert witnesses, such as a crash reconstruction expert, to determine what led to the fatal big rig crash. From there, the lawyer will build a strong case for maximum compensation to present in insurance negotiations or in the courtroom if necessary.

Remember that time is of the essence in commercial truck accident cases. That is because a letter of preservation of evidence must be sent to the other side right away before evidence is destroyed or lost over time. There is also a two-year statute of limitations that generally applies to these matters. Therefore, it is crucial to work with an experienced Modesto truck accident lawyer to ensure that all aspects of your case are handled appropriately. The Redondo Beach Unified School District has identified its next top administrator.

The Redondo school board is set to appoint Nicole Wesley, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources, as the new superintendent of schools next week.

If approved during the Board of Education’s Tuesday, Oct. 11, meeting, Wesley would officially begin her new role on Jan. 1; she would make $309,000 annually. Current Superintendent Steven Keller will retire at the end of the calendar year — in the middle of the 2022-23 school year — after 16 years leading the district and 36 years working in public education.

Wesley, meanwhile, has previously served as the district’s executive director of student services, assistant principal and principal of Redondo Union High School, and principal of Adams Middle School.

“I am honored and humbled to serve as the new superintendent of schools for RBUSD,” Wesley said in a press release. “When I began as an assistant principal in 2004, I learned Redondo Beach is a remarkable place to learn, work, and live. Team RBUSD and I are ‘all in’ on continuing to lead our students, families, teachers, staff, and community partners to build upon our many successes.”

Before landing at RBUSD, Wesley was a middle school teacher and a high school assistant principal in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Wesley is also an adjunct professor, teaching in educational leadership programs at the university level, RBUSD’s press release said.

She has a bachelor’s degree from UCLA, a master’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills and a doctorate in educational leadership from UCLA.

The Board of Education is excited to work with Wesley in this new role, President David Witkin said in the RBUSD release, as she has been a remarkable administrative leader in the district for the past 18 years.

“Dr. Wesley has the experience, intellect and drive to take RBUSD to the next level,” Witkin said. “She has a proven track record of improving student achievement and well-being, as well as building partnerships with stakeholders through her collaborative, caring and committed approach.”

With her background, Witkin added, Wesley will start from day one with a deep understanding of the district’s successes and areas of growth, and the belief that all RBUSD students deserve access to a high-quality education and opportunities for personal growth.

The district will host a meet-and-greet opportunity for students, parents, staff and community members to meet Wesley at a future date.

When it comes to his basketball future, Wesley Yates III trusts family over anyone else.

Beaumont United's senior star kept that in mind while choosing a college program.

One of the most sought-after shooting guards in the country, Yates committed to the University of Washington during a ceremony Wednesday morning inside the Jackson Center on United's campus.

Yates has family on the Huskies staff. His cousin and former NBA player Quincy Pondexter serves as an assistant under Huskies head coach Mike Hopkins.

Yates' ultimate goal is to play in the NBA. He thinks Pondexter and Washington's program will best help him reach that professional level.

"The family that I have out there and (Pondexter) playing in the NBA, I feel like he'll push me to my limits," Yates said. "I trust him with my development."

The verbal pledge comes nearly two months after Yates cut down his college list on Aug. 13.

Entering Wednesday, nine schools were still in the mix for Yates – Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Gonzaga, Houston, LSU, Stanford, Texas and Washington.

A 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard, Yates took two official visits in September, touring LSU and Texas. Yates had taken previous official visits to Auburn, Stanford and Washington during his junior year.

Yates said he had taken other unofficial visits to Seattle since last year's trip on Washington's campus. He quickly realized Washington would be high on his list, but also knew plenty other schools would come calling.

"It's hard to tell so many schools no," Yates said. "I could have picked any of my nine schools, and it wouldn't have been a bad decision. I had to figure out what was best for me, and I felt most comfortable at Washington."

The Huskies, a member of the Pac-12 Conference, went 17-15 last season and reached the conference tournament quarterfinals. Washington did not qualify for the NCAA Division I tournament or the National Invitation Tournament.

Coaches and family members praised Yates' athletic and academic ability during Wednesday's ceremony. Yates is the 37th-ranked national prospect in the Class of 2023, and he possesses a 3.9 grade point average at United.

United assistant coach Tramaine Hancock has known Yates since he was 5 years old, and said Yates will have an immediate impact at Washington.

"That program is changed instantly. (Yates) is a culture-changer, and we can attest to that at Beaumont United," Hancock said.

Yates' father, Wesley Yates Jr., fought back tears as he congratulated his son on stage.

"That's my road dog. That's my ride or die...go be great," Yates' father said.

Yates was the Timberwolves' leading scorer last season, averaging more than 20 points per game. He's set to attend the USA Basketball Junior National Team Minicamp, which will take place Oct 7-10 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He's still not signed, but the commitment is a major step forward in the recruiting process. Yates can make things official with the University of Washington starting on Nov. 9, when the early signing period begins for Division I college basketball.

United will move up to UIL 6A basketball this season after winning back-to-back 5A championships.

This off-season, Yates was courted by prep schools nationwide, but chose to stay at United and go for the three-peat during his senior year.

"I wanted to show kids in Beaumont that you can do it here," Yates said. "You don't have to leave for a prep school to make it to the next level."
